Beaches and Bay Series: Spotlight on North County Beaches and Promenades
San Diegans have a love affair with the ocean, and the coastline is our playground. Whether your favorite getaway is a popular sandy beach, a grassy overlook bluff, or a coastal lagoon nature walk, San Diego has something for everyone.
With the help of the California Coastal Commission, we present our region’s coastal access points in a two part series. In this issue, Part I includes North County Coastal access points, from San Onofre to La Jolla. In our next issue, we will continue our exploration down the coast from Pacific Beach to the US-Mexico Border.

Can San Diego Survive the “Big One?”
Sudden tremors rip open a jagged chasm along California’s San Andreas Fault. Originating 60 miles south of Palm Springs near the Salton Sea, a northwest rupture ripples the earth’s crust like a pond’s surface, radiating outward and sending shock waves directly into Los Angeles. San Diego bobs up and down like a buoy. This visual simulation of a magnitude 7.7 earthquake along the San Andreas Fault, called TeraShake, allows researchers to study variables such as rupture direction and surface velocity. Rendered by the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) Department of Visual services, it presents the biggest and most detailed scenario of “The Big One”.
